A Brief Look at the History Behind the Shabby Chic Movement
By Lynn Cressy

When it comes to home decor ideas, one trend has really caught on:  Shabby Chic.  Although this style may seem like a recent trend, the term actually dates back to the 80s when it was first used in an issue of The World of Interiors.

The actual shabby chic style began in Great Britain, where this type of decor was meant to imitate the look found in old country houses.  Here, old paintwork, faded sofas and curtains, and good yet unassuming taste was a mainstay.  As a result, the look created an elegant effect achieved with very little effort.

Today, those looking to follow this home decor trend can purchase furniture and furnishes that are aged.  Or, they may purchase new items that have been purposely created to have a worn or distressed look. In either case, the end result is striking and certain to make quite a statement.

Due to its simple elegance, shabby chic has become quite popular in the world of interior design.  Nonetheless, the furniture and furnishings within this style category can draw inspiration from a number of different sources.  Some of the more popular inspirations for these items include painted decorations from 18th century Sweden, items with a French Chateau inspiration, and those that have the same characteristics as items created by the American Shakers.

Depending on your personal taste and style, you may select shabby chic items that are plain and simple or you may choose those that are intricately detailed.  In either case, the distressed look of the materials used to make the item is key and is what will set your decor apart from that of others.
