| Recognizing Shabby Chic When You See It |
|
By Lynn Cressy The term "shabby chic" is thrown around quite frequently, but that doesn't mean the term is fully understood. Since the basic definition of the term means that the items used to decorate the room have an old or worn out look, some people believe that any item that is faded or otherwise worn falls into this style category. The reality is that decorating in a shabby chic style requires more than just gathering together several old items. In fact, the items don't have to be old at all. Rather, they may be new items that are simply created to look old. There are many ways that new home décor items can be made to look as if they are much older than they really are. For example, some items can be made to look older by simply applying heavy amounts of paint. By creating several layers and allowing some of the layers to show through, an older look can be created. This can often be accomplished by painting the item and then sanding or rubbing off the top layer until the base coats or the underlying wood or metal is exposed. In addition to the fact that shabby chic items can be new, creating this décor in a room also involves coordination. The same basic elements of design still must be maintained when decorating in this style. As such, although the items may be worn and old looking, they should still compliment one another and work together to create an overall pulled together look in the room.
